When choosing wood for a fireplace, you have to take into account several parameters, such as density, hardness, cleavability, bark content, degree of drying, as well as the speed of drying. These parameters of fireplace wood determine the size of the flame, the amount of heat and the amount of smoke that accompanies combustion. These parameters also affect the prices of fireplace wood.

Fireplace wood vs calorific value?

The calorific value of the fireplace wood, or its yield, depends on its density after drying. A small flame indicates the burning of hardwood, yet it gives off more heat. It burns more slowly, and therefore does not need to be replenished so often. As a result, although the prices of such wood are higher, it may prove more economical; in addition, it will take up less space in your garage than softwood.

Fireplace wood and its cleavability?

This property is of little importance to the end client who buys the wood chopped into pieces suitable for the fireplace. However, if you buy wood in large pieces and have to chop it yourself, it is definitely easier to chop beech or birch; it is much more difficult to tackle elm or hornbeam.

Fireplace wood and bark content?

The large proportion of bark in fireplace wood affects its calorific value. With a large proportion of bark, more wood has to be ordered, which affects the cost of heating. As a rule, wood with a high bark content is cheaper, but it also gives off more smoke, which can reduce the fuel quality.

The drying capacity of fireplace wood.

This feature is important when you buy freshly cut wood and have to wait for it to dry. This property determines the seasoning time after which the wood will be suitable for burning in the fireplace. The differences in drying times are very large and can range from a few months for birch to two years for oak.

How to season fireplace wood?

The wood to be used for the fireplace after cutting should be seasoned, that is, dried under a roof for an average of two years. There are special drying kilns that can speed up the process.

The best types of wood for the fireplace

No matter how long it is seasoned, softwood from coniferous trees is not very suitable for burning in a fireplace. It contains resin that, as it evaporates, settles on the glass and inside the chimney, forming an oily layer that is difficult to remove. In high temperatures resin tends to shoot up, which is a serious issue with an open fireplace. You avoid this with wood that contains little resin, so hardwood from deciduous trees. It burns evenly without producing excess smoke. This keeps not only the fireplace glass clean, but also the chimney flue, which is much more difficult to clean. Unfortunately, hardwood also has its drawbacks: if it contains too many acids and tannins, which emit smoke, soot, acids, tar and other substances during combustion, it will contaminate the fireplace and flue as well. The best and most calorific fireplace hardwood species are: hornbeam, oak, beech and ash. Fruit trees are also valuable, especially plum, apple or pear. The density of plum wood is comparable to hornbeam, and apple and pear wood to ash. Cherry and sour cherry wood has a lower calorific value; it additionally contains wood gum, hence it can emit more pollutants during combustion.
